Pathway F Guide
Completion of the clinical experience requirement under the direct supervision of an experienced IBCLC is the hallmark of Pathway F. This pathway to exam eligibility requires that you demonstrate competence in all the skill sets listed on the Clinical Competencies for IBCLC Practice.
You must report a minimum of 500 BC hours that were completed under the direct supervision of an experienced IBCLC. The IBLCE has defined direct supervision as a gradual process which begins with observation, moves to clinical practice experience under direct observation until the skill is mastered, and culminates with independent practice with the mentor or supervisor physically nearby to assist and offer advice and support. Furthermore, the mentor or supervisor must be a currently certified IBCLC who has recertified at least once.
Candidates must submit a training plan to IBLCE and the plan must be approved prior to beginning the directly supervised clinical practice. In addition, the candidate must make arrangements with a recertified IBCLC who will provide the required direct supervision and clinical settings needed to meet Pathway F requirements—the IBLCE does not maintain a list of recertified IBCLCs who are willing to mentor candidates.
